How To Bathe a Newborn

2. Check the water temperature.
The water should be warm, not hotβ€”around 98–100Β°F (37–38Β°C). Test it with your wrist or elbow.

3. Undress your baby and wrap them in a towel.
Leave the head exposed. Unwrap only the parts you’re washing to keep them warm.

4. Clean their face first.
Use a damp, clean washcloth with just water. Wipe eyes (inner to outer corner), face, and behind the ears gently.

5. Wash their hair (optional).
Support your baby’s head over the basin, wet it gently, add a small amount of baby shampoo, and rinse carefully.

6. Gently clean the body.
Unwrap the towel, and using the damp washcloth or your hand, wash the baby’s neck, arms, belly, legs, and back. Pay attention to folds and creases.

7. Clean the diaper area last.
Always wash front to back, especially for girls. Rinse gently.

8. Dry and dress your baby.
Wrap them immediately in a soft towel and pat dryβ€”don’t rub. Make sure all creases are dry. Then put on a clean diaper and cozy clothes.
